FLEET HISTORIES Vol 3

The REISS - PEAVEY - GARTLAND - FARRAR - WESTERN - BASSETT - FOOTE Fleets-

120 Photographs - 81/2 x 11 Format - Illustrations/Diagrams - Hard Cover - Cross Indexed

This volume is a portrayal of different operating styles among vessel managers. Some chose to own their vessels outright, while others elected only a husbanding role for hire. Both styles served their principals handsomely.

In this volume the fleets based in the United States "grew together" with Reiss acquiring the Peavey fleet and Reiss and Gartland having some overlap of directorships, and eventually joint ownership of the Redland Steamship Company. The Canadian fleets had managerial involvement with each other in the early days, with some commonality of directorships among the Farrar, Western and Bassett Fleets. The Foote fleet provides an interesting combination of both vessel operations and the marine insurance business.

Many rare photographs depict vessels in all the fleets- some never before shown in a published work. Over three years in production, Volume Three is sure to enlighten readers about the rise and dissolution of the respective vessel companies.

FLEET HISTORIES Vol 4

The FLEETS OF JAMES A. PAISLEY and the 14 FLEETS OF JAMES PLAYFAIR

Over 100 Photographs - 8 1/2 x 11 Format - Illustrations/Diagrams -

Hard Cover - Cross Indexed

Paisley and Playfair shared much in common and seemed to compliment each others abilities. It was Paisley's coal mining and sales efforts coupled with Playfairs financial ties to Henry W. Richardson of Kingston, Ontario which provided the strength for numerous successful ventures.

James Richardson and Sons were key to Plaiyfair's ventures since they provided much of the financial backing need for Playfair to expand his marine interests. They also ended up owning a substantial share of James Paisley's coal company.

Like the previous three volumes, this book is much more than a recitation of fleet activities. It is the FIRST detailed explanation of Richardson's "silent" involvement that allowed Playfair to gain the stature he did on the Great Lakes. It also describes how Paisley and Playfair parlayed their individual expertise to become one of the major shipping magnates of their time.

FLEET HISTORIES VOL 6

The CLEVELAND-CLIFFS, DETROIT and CLEVELAND NAVIGATION COMPANY,
HAWGOOD AND TRAVERSE CITY FLEETS

Over 200 Photographs, Illustrations, Diagrams
81/2" x 11" Format - Hard Cover

This SIXTH volume in the FLEET HISTORIES SERIES features the ten fleets of CLeveland-Cliffs, the D-C Line (otherwise known as the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company, Traverse City Transportation and the thirteen fleets of the Hawgood family.

Early beginnings, interim ups and downs and the final days before liquidation are all discussed. In the case of Cleveland-Cliffs, a management rationale to delegate the floating business to others and to concentrate on the iron ore business led them to eventually getting out of vessel operations altogether.

For D&C, auto competition and rail carriage of less-than-car-load lots, plus stricter Coast Guard requirements and labor unrest doomed passenger traffic.

The Hawgood Fleet died earlier than most and the Traverse City Transportation Company was a one vessel company that could not withstand the onslaught of the Great Depression.

Over two years were spent in the production of this volume. It contains many rare photographs depicting vessels during their life within their respective fleets.

As in all of the Fleet Histories books - All vessels are crossed referenced and vital statistics provided.
